How To Choose Your Power Scooter

A power scooter is an important purchase that needs to be carefully considered.  This is an item that will make a huge difference in your mobility, in your independence, and in your whole attitude about life.  Therefore, it is very important to think about exactly what features you consider to be the most important to you.

First, consider how important size and speed is to you.  Power scooters are made in both a 3 wheel model and a 4 wheel model.  The newer of the two types is the 3 wheel, and it weighs about 200 to 250 pounds so is considerably lighter than its 4 wheel counterpart.

The 3 wheel model is a great choice for someone who travels a great deal or who is often using their scooter both inside and outside, since this is the most easily portable model made today.  However, the 3 wheel model may sacrifice a bit of speed in order to achieve this increased portability: Average speed is 3-5 miles per hour.

The 4 wheel model is the more traditionally styled power scooter, and it typically weighs about 100 pounds more than the 3 wheel models, coming in at about 350 pounds.  The 4 wheel model is the faster of the two types, as a typical speed is about 5-6 miles per hour.  Portability is harder with this model, due to its increased bulk, however most of the 4 wheel models do fold up for easy storage just as the 3 wheel ones do, although with extra bulk.

Another thing to consider when choosing your power scooter is the type of power that would be most convenient for you.  The electric scooters use a 12 volt battery which is rechargeable.  Gas motor scooters are less popular, but may sometimes be more convenient since it is not necessary to remember to charge this type of scooter.

The more popular of the two types is the electric scooter, but buyers need to be sure they are proactive about keeping the scooter charged and ready for use. Regardless of the power scooter you choose, this is an important choice, and one that will give you the freedom you have been waiting for.

A scooter means the difference between staying home and getting out, so it's one of the smartest investments you can make.

I looked at both models as well. I've been driving most of my life and used to ride motorcycles as well. I've gone for the 3-wheel model as it looks more like to motorcycle to me and it has better manoeverability with the single front wheel. I take your point on stability. You need to be more aware with the 3-wheeler especially at the edge of the sidewalk and on rough terrain.

I looked at both the 3-wheel and 4-wheel power scooters before buying mine. In the end I decided to go for the 4-wheel version. The main reason was stability. I'm not a natural driver so I was worried I might topple over on just the three wheels. The 4-wheel scooter feels safer to me even though it doesn't look as stylish as some of the newer 3-wheel models. Safety is more important to me and I just felt safer with the extra wheel.
